Scanning Media Items for Viruses

Viruses present a very low risk in Nucleus, however, as a set of users are uploading files which are then downloaded by judges on their local machines there is always a risk of infection. BAFTA has taken the step to implement this in BAFTA administrated instances. A new server is spun up in the AWS account which hosts a third-party anti-virus software. Once each file is uploaded to Nucleus it is downloaded to the server which hosts the software and scanned. If the file is clean no action is taken, however, if the file is flagged as containing a virus the media item is marked as such and the asset is deleted.

There are two places where the asset is flagged as a virus:

  1. In the entrant media library

2. On the media item list in the admin interface

3. On the admin entry form in the Media Item question

No automated email is sent to admins or entrants in this instance to avoid panicking users. If admins see a file marked as virus then the entrant should be contacted immediately explaining that the file is likely to contain a virus. Tell the user to speak with their IT department and ask them to supply a new file that is clean.

BAFTA nor BAFTA Tech is able to provide any support regarding viruses for entrants as this is out of our scope of support. If as an admin user you are concerned about potentially having an infected file on your local system contact your IT department.

Note – This feature is not implemented on each instance. Additional cost will be incurred as a yearly licence for the virus scanning software will need to be purchased and additional AWS servers will need to be implemented along with a small development setup charge. For a full quote and request to set up this feature please create a support ticket and request implementation of virus scanning.
