Subtitles and Closed Captions

Subtitles are now available in Nucleus. The feature is always available and does not need to be switched on and there is very little functionality for Admins to administer. This guide is designed to briefly explain to Admins how the functionality works so that you can provide support and write explanation guides for your Entrants.

Subtitles are part of the Media Library, not the Entry Form, and are only available for video file Media Items.

How To Upload Subtitles

When a User creates a video file Media Item, they will be provided with an option to upload Subtitle and Closed Caption files on the Video Media Item page. To access this:

  1. Log into the Entrant Interface
  2. Navigate to the Media Library
  3. Search for Video Media Items
  4. Click on one of the Media Items to see the settings page
  5. On the right below File Details there is a Subtitles Section
  6. Click on Add File
  7. Select the Language
  8. If the file is for Closed Captions check the CC box
  9. Click Add File and the file will be uploaded
  10. Click on the X to remove any unwanted files

Information

  • The file will automatically appear in the player after a few minutes.
  • Currently only .vtt files are supported. If Entrants can only provide SRT files, they will be automatically converted to .vtt files to ensure seamless playback in BitMovin.
  • Deleted files will be removed from the player automatically.
  • Failed files will display an error message and will need to be deleted and replaced.
  • Two files for each language can be provided, one must be Closed Captions.
  • Uploading or deleting files does not affect the Entry Status or the Video Status.

How To View Subtitles

The subtitle files will automatically appear in the Video Player for Judges to use, if they wish.

  • To turn on subtitles the user needs to click on the cog icon in the bottom right of the player. If subtitles have been provided, the word Subtitles will appear in the menu. The word Off with an arrow will appear to the right of subtitles. Clicking on this will display the available languages.
  • Clicking on the cog item next to the word Subtitles will give the user options to change the subtitles display style. Note that we are unable to change the default and only the viewer can change this.

Administration Functions

As stated above there is not much for Admin Users in terms of functionality. The following functions exist for Admin Users:

  • On the admin Media Library table there is a new column which allows Admins to filter for videos with subtitles
  • Admins can upload subtitles by either:
    • Logging in as Entrant User
    • Clicking Edit on a Video File in the Media Library Table
  • Admins can review the subtitles in any player when reviewing the video using the same functionality as Judges
